What is Language?

Language is how children understand and use words to connect with others.

  • Understanding words (receptive language)
  • Using words (expressive language)
  • Following directions
  • Answering questions
  • Social interaction

👂 RECEPTIVE VS  💬 EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE

👂RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE: Following directions, Understanding words, Answering questions

💬 EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE: Using words and sentences, Asking for help, Sharing thoughts and feelings

Toddlers (12–24 Months)

  • Not using gestures
  • Limited understanding of words
  • Not saying words by 15–18 months
  • Limited interest in communication

💡 Early communication starts before words—gestures and interaction matter.

Early Talkers (2-3 Years)

  • Fewer than 50 words
  • Not combining words
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Repeats more than initiates
  • Frustration when communicating

🌱 This is when language starts to grow quickly—delays may become more noticeable..

Preschool (3–4 Years)

  •  Short or incomplete sentences
  • Difficulty answering questions
  • Limited vocabulary
  • Trouble understanding directions

✨ Children should be using language more clearly to share ideas.

Early School Age (4–5+ Years)

  •  Difficulty telling stories
  • Trouble with multi-step directions
  • Misunderstands questions
  • Grammar errors
  • Social communication challenges

⏳ Language becomes more complex as children prepare for school success.
